If you remember my previous posts on Damana etc.. you'll know that Siyabalanduwa is a crucial junction. If you turn left and head north at Siyabalanduwa junction you can travel to Ampara. If you continue on the eastern direction you can travel to Pottuvil. You find world renowned sensational surfer's paradise beach " Arugam Bay" just about 2-3 Km's from Pottuvil. Further down you find Panama and Okanda also The Kudumbigala sanctuary as well as the Kudumbigala Buddhist monastery. This entire area is rich with ancient ruins of buddhist temples and are scattered all over the jungles.About 14 Km's from Panama you get Kumana national park as well. Further down you find Yala sanctuary connecting with Kumana sanctuary. . The whole satellite view covered in pitch green gives you an idea as how much is the forest coverage around this part of the country. I found this blog which I thought readers could get some useful insight on the local excursions around the area. http://siyambala.com/
Lahugala itself is a wild life sanctuary.
Travelling to Lahugala MOH or Lahugala DH is through the jungle itself. The giant elephants roam this area freely and there are no electric fences to stop them coming from to the road. However my personal experience is that as long as you mind your own business, respect their space you don't get into any trouble with them. However please note that you should be inside a car or a jeep or a bus for this to be true. Elephants are easily agitated by cyclists and motor cyclists. So don't even think about travelling on them.
One of the best things in this part of the country is you have unspoiled beautiful well carpeted roads. It's a pleasure driving on these roads.
Elephant in the edge of the lahugala tank. Herds of elephants in hundreds frequent this tank in the very morning and in the evening.
Lahugala MOH office is right on the edge of the A4 road right next to the Lahugala MOH office is the Lahugala DH
Lahugala MOH office has only one MOH and no AMOH. Since Lahugala has the lowest population in the Ampara district it is possible to manage by just one MOH. It has a quarters and it has water and electricity. While it's in close proximity to so many beautiful places as I mentioned earlier, the biggest drawback is elephants and the remoteness. stretch of A4 from Siyabalanduwa to Pottuvil is not frequented by public transport. To get essentials one has to travel to either pottuvil which is 14 Km's away or to Siyabalanduwa which is 20 Km's away. Despite availability of few tuk tuks at Lahugala town they are not practical to travel in taking the wild jumbos into the equation. Apart from that service at Lahugala MOH or Lahugala DH is sure to leave you with memories of a life time.
